The Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago consisting of 7641 islands divided into three major island groups namely Mindanao, Luzon, and Visayas. Its total population is 100 million including 10 major ethnic groups, 100 tribal groups and indigenous peoples. Manila is the capital city and is the National Capital Region. 80% of the Filipinos are Roman Catholics followed by 11% Muslims and 9% tribal. It Ranks 20th among the happiest countries in the world according to the “Happy Planet Index”.

There are more than 175 languages spoken in the Philippines classified as Malayo-Polynesian languages. Filipino is popularly spoken and they use English and Filipino as their official languages as directed by the constitution. The culture mix can be easily observed in the country. It has impressions of Spanish, American, and Asian culture which are reflected in their lifestyle, beliefs, and customs. They are very fond of music reading literature, and playing distinct musical instruments. Other cultural attractions of the region are celebrating festivals like Christmas, New year and Noche Buena (midnight meal). Sports include martial arts (Arnis), football, basketball, and boxing.
